EPA names Yale-New Haven Hospital among the best in New England for workplace commuters
NEW HAVEN –Yale-New Haven Hospital has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as one of New England’s top workplaces for commuters for its innovative commuter benefits programs including subsidized mass transit, preferential parking for commuters and free shuttle service.
“I think it is wonderful that Yale-New Haven was formally recognized by the EPA for the many programs offered to employees over the years as alternatives to use of single occupancy vehicles,” said Steve Merz, YNHH’s vice president of administration. “The hospital is committed to doing its part to reduce traffic, congestion and pollution in the New Haven community.”
To help employees reduce their cost of commuting and decrease the number of cars on area roads, Yale-New Haven offers employees subsidized use of Metro North and Shoreline East trains, free commuter buses from area Park and Ride lots and shuttle service from Guilford, Orange, Milford, and East, West and North Haven commuter lots to the hospital and back.
To increase train ridership, the hospital pays 50 percent of an employee’s monthly ticket – up to $45 per month in pre-tax dollars. Free shuttle service is available from Union Station to the hospital.
To make carpooling more desirable, YNHH has allocated preferred parking spaces for carpools of two or more employees. The cost of parking in the convenient spots is shared by the carpoolers.
The hospital also subsidizes employee ridership on Connecticut Transit buses. Monthly passes at 50 percent of cost are available to all employees. In addition, YNHH employees enjoy telecommuting, vanpooling and more amenities for bicycle riders.
In New England, cars and trucks contribute more than half the nitrogen oxide emissions, a key ingredient in the formation of ozone smog. New England’s Best Workplaces for Commuters recognizes those employers who are doing their part to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.
