Yale-New Haven Hospital makes U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll for America’s Best Hospitals

NEW HAVEN – For the first time, U.S. News & World Report has named Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) to its Honor Roll as one of the nation’s top hospitals.

YNHH ranked 15th in the United States according to the publication’s annual “America’s Best Hospitals” rankings in the July 23 issue. Yale-New Haven Hospital was the only Connecticut hospital selected to the Honor Roll, and one of only three hospitals in New England to be honored.

“We are most pleased to be included in U.S. News & World Report’s elite Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals,” said Peter Herbert, M.D., chief of staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital. “This recognition is due to the dedication of our outstanding medical and nursing staffs who deliver exceptional patient care, conduct innovative clinical research, train future generations of health care leaders, and serve our New Haven community in an exemplary way.”

In addition to being included on the list of the 18 best U.S. hospitals, Yale-New Haven Hospital was ranked among the very best in the nation in 10 of the 16 medical specialties evaluated: cancer; digestive disorders; ear, nose and throat; endocrinology; geriatrics, gynecology; heart and heart surgery; kidney disease; psychiatry; and respiratory disorders.
Of those, YNHH’s geriatrics ranking made the nation’s top ten for the seventh time and psychiatry for the thirteenth time, while cancer, digestive disorders, endocrinology, gynecology, kidney disease, and respiratory disorders were all ranked in the nation’s top 25.

Only 173 of the 5,462 hospitals evaluated were ranked in one or more clinical specialties. In New England, YNHH joined Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, both of Boston, on the 2007 Honor Roll.
The 2007 U.S. News & World Report rankings were produced by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Hospitals qualifying for this year’s Honor Roll were ranked at or near the top in at least six specialties.

Yale-New Haven Hospital is a primary university teaching hospital that accepts patients from throughout Connecticut, the nation and the world. Last year, the hospital treated more than 50,000 inpatients and more than 500,000 outpatients. One of the area’s largest, oldest and most stable employers with approximately 7,200 employees and a medical staff of 3,400, Yale-New Haven Hospital is well known for its clinical excellence and patient service.
