Employees Support Community Causes With Their Feet – and Wallets
On three Sundays in spring 2008 at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, Yale-New Haven Hospital employees, their families and friends walked for three important community groups. “Our employees gave up up to three Sundays to walk and raise money for community organizations,” said Richard D’Aquila, executive vice president and COO. “I am enormously proud of all the employees who walked and gave generously on behalf of babies, breast cancer and healthy hearts.”
Y-Me Walk to Empower
On Mother’s Day, May 11, 270 employees walked in the Y-ME Walk to Empower. Debbie Klotzer, executive assistant, Cancer Network, chaired the hospital team that raised $14,000. The funds will provide support for women with breast cancer through information, support groups, early detection, teen workshops, and wigs and prostheses.
March for Babies
Led by Michael Apkon, M.D., vice president and executive director of Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, more than 150 employees and members of the Friends of Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital walked in the March of Dimes March for Babies on Sunday, April 27. To date, the YNHCH team has raised more than $33,000 for the March of Dimes which helps fight premature births.
American Heart Association
With the help of 35 team captains, Mariane Carna, executive director, Heart and Vascular Center, led a team of more than 700 employees on the Greater New Haven Heart Walk on May 18. The hospital provided a heart-healthy breakfast to get walkers energized for the 3- mile trek and a tasty barbecue lunch to refresh employees after the walk. To date, the YNHH team has raised more than $52,000 for the important work of the American Heart Association.
