Finance Celebrates 20 Years of Outstanding Employees
More than 300 YNHH and Yale New Haven Health System employees recently filled the spacious atrium at Medical Center South to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Finance Division’s popular Employee of the Month program.
In 20 years, 227 employees have been honored on a monthly basis. Employees may nominate colleagues or managers and the Finance Customer Relations Committee (FCRC) reviews the nominations, makes the final decision and notifies the employee.
“The Employee of the Month program is an important honor that means a great deal to the employees of our division,” said Debbie Zyck, transaction manager, SBO, and chair of the committee, who noted that the families of some honored employees have included it in their loved one’s obituaries. “The idea for it came from employees 20 years ago and it is as vibrant a form of recognition today as it was in 1987.”
For the 20th anniversary, the committee invited all employees who had been honored over the years. This included those who retired as well as others who had left the hospital, with some coming from as far as North Carolina for the celebration.
“This program was in full swing when I became head of the department and it was clear to me how meaningful this recognition is to employees,” said Jim Staten, executive vice president, Finance, which employs more than 1,000 people in departments that include IS&T, Patient Financial and Admitting Service, Corporate Finance, Reimbursement, General Accounting, Accounts Payable and Medical Records. “Recognizing outstanding employees provides all of us with the opportunity once a month to say: ‘You are doing a terrific job and setting a great example for us.’”
Julie Seipel, patient account analyst in the Patient Account Analysis Group, was named Employee of the Month in May 2007. “I was surprised, shocked and excited – all at the same time – when I realized I was being honored,” said Seipel, a two-year veteran. “People I didn’t know came up and congratulated me. It was a wonderful experience to be chosen.”
